Many of us have trouble falling asleep and sometimes reach for the sleep aid. Otherwise, we’ll be a wreck the next day and can’t function without too many cups of coffee. Then there are others, who just turn on the television and out they go in five minutes.

When I have trouble falling asleep, I reach for my phone and begin reading articles on medium. Or I read about healthy foods and lifestyles or catch up on the next day’s forecast to be ready for my run in the morning.

Here is a list I put together from various foods that are science-backed and people have tried and are raving about.

1. Bananas

Bananas contain tryptophan which is an amino acid that helps your body produce serotonin to induce sleep. So reach for that banana but give yourself enough time to digest it before bed. See my previous article on all the great benefits of a banana and the best time to eat it.

2. Cherries

This is another fruit that is packed with melatonin and helps you to fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer. It also has tryptophan and serotonin which help induce a deeper sleep.

3. Cereal with Milk

Cereal with milk contains tryptophan and helps you to relax for easy sleep.

4. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is filled with tryptophan but also boosts the metabolic system. The good news is you can burn calories while you sleep and even through to the next morning. Excellent for a spread on carbohydrate crackers to induce sleep.

5. Popcorn

Oh, yeah! Believe it or not, popcorn is delicious in the evening. Not only is it a good complex, carbohydrate to release serotonin, but it is also a sleep-inducing food that is less abrasive to the stomach.

Thank you for reading and hope you enjoyed this article!
